Sharing Hope

This week I had a sobering realization.  One of the guys who has been staying at the mission decided to take his life.  He threw himself in front of a train.  This incident reminded me of one of my brothers childhood friends who did the same.  I sat at my desk after I heard the news and asked myself what I could have done different.  He was one of 300 men using our facilities.  Ultimately I feel like God was just challenging me to show more hope to the guys.  When someone gets to that point it is because they have lost all hope.

I think we all should be showing hope to the world around us by living out the hope we have in Christ.  God talks about hope throughout the Bible.  Here are a few examples:

"And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you." Psalm 39:7

"Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God."
Psalm 43:5

"Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful." Hebrews 10:23

God is clear that he should be our hope. The problem is that we live in a world where we've been taught that our hope lies in our possessions, or relationships, our money, our experience, our ability, and our intellect. Consequently, these things fail us and in turn leave many people devoid of hope. We who follow Christ are to put our hope in Jesus and should be carrying that hope to all the people around us.

Our world is hungry for hope. You and I have the opportunity to let the world see a people whose hope lies solely in Christ. It will not be easy and it will look crazy to most people, but it is true.

"May the god of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may about in hope." Romans 15:14

If we about in hope and walk beside the hopeless then just maybe the abundance can begin to affect them. This is my prayer and He is my hope.

Hope your not alone.

  2. Wow how incredibly sad. I will be praying for you and the guys at the mission. I will pray that God will be able to use this as a lesson in Hope, like you said.
